The Girls Tech Camp: Girlhood Remixed offers girls who have completed fifth grade through those who have graduated eighth grade access to digital tools, not only to help them grow interests in technology but also to allow them to grow as valuable members of their communities by exploring what it means to be a girl today. Camp director Mavis Beckson, a doctoral student in NMSU’s English Department’s Rhetoric and Professional Communication program, describes herself as a “gender advocate with experience in working with non-profits serving to empower and support women's education.” The camps takes place Monday, June 10 through Friday, June 14. It is designed to empower girls, enlighten them of the possibilities to create technical projects beyond traditional learning, and bridge the gender gaps existing with respect to technologies. Sponsors include Wells Fargo and the NMSU’s Gender & Sexuality Studies program in the Interdisciplinary Studies Department. The registration fee for each camp is $50 per child, due on the first day of the camp. This camp will end with a public showcasing of the websites, videos and other works created by the girls involved in this year’s program in the early evening of Friday, June 14. Dear LADH Families, As you may know, the Public Education Commission (PEC) voted not to renew LADH’s Charter which meant that LADH would close at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. As you know, LADH filed an appeal to the PEC’s decision with the NM Secretary of Education, Dr. Karen Trujillo. Dr. Trujillo has reversed the PEC’s decision and has ordered the conditional approval of LADH’s charter for a period of two years with conditions to be determined by the Charter School Division (CSD). We are very excited to share this news with you and are aware that this also means we must continue to work together as staff, students, and parents, to address our academic deficiencies to ensure LADH continues to serve students them the best education while at LADH. Dear LADH Families, Mrs. Soriano’s services have been scheduled for Thursday and Friday of this week. Mrs. Soriano’s Rosary will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 7:00 pm at Holy Cross Catholic Church (1327 N. Miranda St.). The funeral service is scheduled for Friday, March 1, 2019 at 10:00 am at Holy Cross, with the burial taking place right after the services at St. Joseph’s Cemetery (100 S. Espina). The family is requesting that students who attend Mrs. Soriano’s services wear red or their performance attire. Thank you, Melissa A. Families of LADH, Our appeal hearing was held on February 20, 2019 in Santa Fe, NM in front of the Hearing Officer appointed by the Secretary of Education. Although our attorney did a wonderful job of presenting our case, it is still an uphill battle. The Hearing Officer will make a recommendation to Karen Trujillo, the Secretary of Education, in the next few weeks and Ms. Trujillo will make the final decision about the future of LADH. Notification will be sent home when LADH receives the decision from Ms. Trujillo. Thank you for all of your support!! Melissa A. Dear La Academia Dolores Huerta Parents, The Public Education Commission (PEC) met on Tuesday December 11 in Santa Fe and considered La Academia Dolores Huerta’s (LADH) charter renewal application. Unfortunately, the PEC members voted 5-2 for nonrenewal of LADH. The school received official documentation of that decision on December 20, 2018. Ms. Miranda and the Governing Council have sought legal advice from our school attorney regarding appealing the decision to the New Mexico Secretary of Education. We have thirty calendar days to formulate and file the appeal. LADH Governing Council and administration ask you to please monitor the school website, Facebook page, email, and Remind 101 messages as an emergency meeting will be scheduled as soon as our school attorney provides us with her recommendation. LADH needs the support of all parents and students at this time! Please attend the emergency meeting to receive more information. Please allow the administration to use their time and focus to gather all necessary and required information for legal counsel. Any and all questions will be answered to the best of our ability.
